RESISTANCE CINEMA PRESENTS: DOUBLE FEATURE: Fertile Memory (1981) & Ma'loul Celebrates its Destruction (1984) dir. Michel Khleifi

Neither documentary nor fiction, Fertile Memory recounts the lives of two very different Palestinian women: Farah Hatoum, a widow living with her children and grandchildren, and Sahar Khalifeh, a novelist from the West Bank. Michel Khleifi carefully observes the two women in their daily lives and highlights their very different personalities. Their divergent opinions and lives play an important role in underlining their common status as Palestinians under Israeli rule, and as women in a male-dominated society. Despite their contrasts, the mother and the intellectual share the same fight for freedom and dignity.

While editing Fertile Memories, Khleifi discovered that part of the footage he had accumulated from the destroyed village of Ma’aloul was not connected to the plot of the two women. This footage became Ma’aloul Celebrates its Destruction, made in 1984. A mural of Ma’aloul village on the wall of a refugee’s house, documentary and semi­documentary footage, and testimonies of the refugees themselves tells the story of just one of hundreds of Palestinian villages that were depopulated in the original Nakba of 1948. We take a stroll among the village ruins and spend time there on Israeli Independence Day, the one day a year when Palestinian families were allowed to leave their villages under martial law in the country’s founding decades.
